Committee 2015-16

Debbie Pace Ross (Treasurer)Debbie

Hi, my name is Debbie and I’ll be your treasurer for the upcoming year!

My main roles as treasurer include ensuring members get the most from their Holdsworth membership, that relationships with sponsors are built and maintained, as well as keeping the club financially balanced. This year, I want to make sure that the law society is accessible to everyone who wishes to join it, and I’m so excited to welcome new members and see our society grow.

The Holdsworth Club is a great society, both in the professional aspect as well as the social one. As a first year, I felt that it really helped to ease the transition into law school and I’m very much looking forward to working with the committee to continue the great work done by our predecessors.

Our committee is dedicated to making your time at the law school fantastic (as well as your time afterwards, of course!) by ensuring you have a great time and also helping you to get as many opportunity to learn about careers and network as we can.

The advice I would give to new students would be not to worry if the work is very daunting and seems a little bit impossible at first, everyone feels the same way especially as law is so challenging. Keep at it and don’t give up, it does get better with time and hard work!

If you see me around, please do come and say hello and remember, always make the most of your time as law students!

Jenni Fuller (Secretary)Jenni

Hi everyone! I’m Jenni and I’m your Secretary for 2015-16.

It’s my role as the secretary to make sure that the club is organised, and to ensure that there is good communication between its members and the committee – so be expecting plenty of emails from me throughout the year about various events/opportunities that are occurring!

I’m there if you have any questions or queries in regards to the Holdsworth Club, so feel free to speak to me if you need any help!

This year, I’m also making a special effort to keep the website and facebook updated at all times and to keep you informed of all of the opportunities that the Holdsworth Club organises, so make sure you keep checking to be up to date with everything that is going on.

I am about to enter my final year as a law student at Birmingham and I have found the Holdsworth Club to be an essential and exciting part of my university experience. Getting involved with the club helps you to meet loads of new friends and ensures for some brilliant nights out which will only enhance your university experience.

If I was to give any new law student some advice, I’d say that make sure you take on all the opportunities made available to you. It’s important that you do work hard, but also immerse yourself in activities outside of your degree. My degree has flown by and I can’t believe I am graduating this year, it is the best time of your life to get involved in the opportunities around you.

I’m really excited about being on the committee this year and look forward to meeting you at all of the amazing events and activities we have planned this year!

Hollie Licence (Careers Officer)Hollie

Hi everyone! I’m Hollie and I’ll be your careers officer for the Holdsworth Club 2015-2016. I was the secretary last year so understand the running of Holdsworth really well.

It’s my role as the careers officer to organise various careers events which will help increase your networking skills, commercial awareness and employability, ensuring that you are as ready as you can be to tackle interviews and assessment days. There will be a wide variety of events such as networking meals, presentation by firms and workshops focuses on key qualities that graduate employers look for.

I am just about to start my final year as a law student at Birmingham and can honestly say that without the Holdsworth club, my time at university would have been nowhere near as exciting. Getting involved with the club helps you to meet loads of new friends and ensures for some brilliant nights out which will only enhance your university experience.

I’m really excited about being on the committee for a second year and look forward to meeting all of you at the amazing events and activities that we have planned for this year.

Alex Liptrot (Inns of Court Student Association Rep)Alex 3

Hey Holdsworth, I’m Alex and I am the ICSA (Inns of Court Student Association) Representative for 2015-2016.

My main role as ICSA rep is to organise events revolving around ‘the bar’ – the

legal profession of a barrister.

Typically this will include organising trips to the Inns of Court in London, of which there are four (Lincoln’s Inn, Middle Temple, Inner Temple and Gray’s Inn). I’m also aiming to arrange for barristers to come into university to speak about the profession and what it means to them.

Ultimately I want you to have better awareness of the bar and of what life at the bar entails. You might know that you want to be a barrister, or think that you don’t want a career in law at all – but I will give you all the information that you need to know about how and where you can study for the bar and what steps are taken in becoming a barrister.

I’m going to be keeping an open door policy throughout the year – anything you feel you need to talk through with me or anything you’d like to share, get in touch. I’ll regularly post on the ICSA facebook page too.

The best piece of advice I can give you is to ‘get involved’. Anything that you think might be of interest to you or you think looks fun, just give it a go. I’ve been involved in countless opportunities throughout my time at uni (most actually not legal or course related) but they have had such a positive impact on my uni life.

Hope to see you guys around!

Matt Hartas (Freshers Rep)

MattHey guys! My name is Matt and I am proud to say that I will be your Fresher’s Rep this year.

My aim is to make your first year an unforgettable one by planning fun events, being a voice for first years and to be there for you guys all year round.

Settling down into university life can be daunting for many people so I am to be the person you can come to for any problems; law related or not. I plan to motivate you throughout the year and to be a helping hand or a shoulder to cry on when things get tough.

My first year with Holdsworth was an unforgettable one, especially with Christmas Trip and the annual law ball. All the events last year were fantastic and have helped me to cement many friendships, and so I urge you to make the most of them.

If you see me around, please don’t hesitate to say hello!

Fergus Kiely (Sports Officer)

FergusMy Role as Sports Officer is to organise all the sports teams within Holdsworth, such as football, rugby and netball. I enter all the teams into their leagues and organise trials, training sessions and matches. I hope to see many of you at the trials, as we want to have as many freshers participating in sport as possible. It is a good way for you to meet new people and immerse yourself in all aspects of university life rather than just the academic side.

I am currently in second year studying Law LLB. I captain the Holdsworth football team, which consists of various 11 a side and 6 a side fixtures every week. I thoroughly enjoy being part of the Holdsworth sport, due to the many friends I have made through both playing football and the joint sports socials that occur several times a year.

All the teams participate in a tournament in Manchester at the end of the year, where we get the opportunity to travel and compete against other law faculties at our various sports. This is a very enjoyable day out and a great conclusion to the year.

My advice for first year is to enjoy freshers and get involved as much as you possibly can. Sport may not be for everyone, but for me, playing sport with my course mates was a great way to meet people in all years of study and it really helped me to settle into a routine at Birmingham.

I hope to see as many of you as possible trialling, or on Holdsworth events such as the LAWD Bar crawl, the Law Christmas Trip and the Law Ball.

Maddy Whitten (Events Officer)

maddieHey everyone, I’m Maddy! I’m one of your events officers alongside Molly this year.

It’s my job to plan all the events this year. There are the legendary bar crawls, like LAWD, one of my favourite nights of the year, the first (3 legged) bar crawl down Broad Street!

The Law Ball is the biggest event of the year; an opportunity for us to dress to impress, be wined and dined and dance the night away!

Top that off with the European Christmas trip and the Slaughter and May theatre trip to give you a really exciting calendar of events for you! Not to mention the surprises we have up our sleeves.

We want to make the events affordable, exciting and fun, and we will be searching for the best prices and offers to make sure this year is a year to remember!

I had an amazing first year at Birmingham and the Holdsworth events were such an important part of my experience. The best way to get involved and make friends on such a big course is to come along to the events and to have fun, especially as a way to relax away from the pressures of such a demanding course!

I made my best friends on Holdsworth events and it is the best way to meet new people! We are so excited to be your events officers this year and can’t wait to see you at all the events!

 Molly Whitehouse (Events Officer)

MollyHey everyone, I’m Molly! I’m one of your events officers alongside Maddie this year.

It’s my job to plan all the events this year. There are the legendary bar crawls, like Law v Medics, one of my favourite nights of the year where we show the medics how much better us lawyers are!

Top that off with the European Christmas trip and we have a really exciting calendar of events for you! Not to mention the surprises we have up our sleeves.

Being students we are, of course, always looking for a bargain and an affordable night out. I will do all that is possible to reduce the prices of Holdsworth events this year so that they can be enjoyed by all students and make sure this year is a year to remember!

 Grace Mullis (Publicity Officer)

GraceHey! I’m Grace and I am so excited to be your Publicity Officer for the Holdsworth Club this year.

I will be responsible for keeping you up to date with all the events and opportunities that Holdsworth have to offer.

The Holdsworth Club has been a huge part of my first year; getting involved with the Holdsworth Netball team, the Holdsworth Drama and partaking in the events throughout the year. All of which contributed to making my first year as enjoyable as it was, and I would recommend getting involved to everyone! Not only does it provide great social opportunities with events such as the LAWD Bar Crawl, but it also provides opportunities within careers in order to support your journey through the course.

Keep an eye out for all the things to come from Holdsworth this year, and I look forward to meeting you all!

Divy Datta (Postgrad Rep)

DivyMy role with Holdsworth is to facilitate, engage and speak on behalf of the post-graduate students. I will also be working with other members of the committee in various different capacities to help make sure this year is a memorable one.

I believe one of the most common traits amongst post-graduate students is their fierce independence. At times however this can make one feel quite isolated even though there are many going through the exact same feeling. All of you have gone to university before, and many of you are international students, so initially it might feel like you don’t know where you fit. Trust me it’s a shared feeling but collectively there is an abundance of different experiences and stories you share. I want to use that as a resource and help you in different ways, be it personal, academic or career related.

I am a Canadian and I was really nervous about going back to university but my first year was the best year of my life by no stretch of the imagination. I got involved with Holdsworth Drama; I made lots of friends, travelled and engaged myself academically. It honestly is about finding the balance and making the most of the time you have. But if you want to leave your mark on something, you have got to contribute. Holdsworth offers you the opportunity to engage with a community of students who all truly want each other’s success. You have got a few years, what will you take with you, what will you leave for others?
