Dear student,

The International Law Moot Court Competition “Alumni Cup” will take place on 22 October 2011 at the University of Birmingham (organised by the Law School). The new Alumni Cup Moot Court competition focuses on contemporary contentious issues in the area of International Law. The Alumni Cup will serve as a selection competition for the roster of the 2011-2012 Phillip Jessup International Law Moot Court Team of the University of Birmingham. The top performers from the Alumni Cup will form the 2011-2012 Jessup International Law Moot Court team, representing the University nationally and, pending the performance in the UK round, internationally.

The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is the world’s largest moot court competition, with participants from over 500 law schools in more than 80 countries. The Jessup Moot Court Competition is a specific-topic moot in Public International Law. The University is an eligible law school to place one moot team in the national, UK preliminary round, where approximately 30 UK universities participate. Teams must first compete in national competitions in London (held in January-February 2012) to earn three spots allocated to the UK to advance to the International Rounds held every spring in Washington, D.C.

The Alumni Cup Moot Court Competition is open for LL.B. and LL.M. students, as well as all other students in the College of Arts and Law. Since space is limited, we kindly ask those willing to participate in the Alumni Cup to apply by submitting a short description of the reasons why they want to participate in the moot court and be part of the University of Birmingham Jessup Moot Court Team, as well as an indication of any relevant experience in Public International Law and in mooting in general by OCTOBER 8, 2011. CVs may also be attached as part of the application process. Once the participants in the Alumni Cup are selected, they will receive the Alumni Cup moot problem.

The timetable for the Alumni Cup moot is as follows. The deadline for applications to participate is 5pm on Saturday 8th of October. Only those who are selected to participate will be notified by Monday 10th of October, whereupon they will receive the moot problem. The participants must submit their skeleton arguments to us by 5pm on Thursday, the 20th of October, and the Alumni Cup moot will take place on Saturday 22nd of October.

This year’s Alumni Cup will involve a moot concerning the death of Osama Bin Laden. Participating students will represent either the nation of United Queendom, who performed the military operation, or the nation of Rakistan, on whose territory the operation took place. The moot will involve two interesting questions relating to the law of armed conflict and international humanitarian law.

Please, submit any queries and your application for participating in the Alumni Cup via email at smp084@bham.ac.uk or mtb064@bham.ac.uk  by 5PM OCTOBER 8, 2011!

Best regards,

Matthew Burton and Stoyan Panov
